ABOUT THE ARCHITECT
André Jacqmain’s work spans at least 60 years, across different periods and trends. He was one of the architects representing the innovative architecture of the second half of the 20th century and is recognized for works such as the Urvati house, the buildings of the universities of Liège and Leuven, the Belgian pavilion at Expo’70 in Osaka and, later, the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels. Thanks to this, André Jacqmain was highly regarded, allowing him to give the development of Calo d’en Real a character of its own, a unique concept in Ibiza and probably in the world. The initial philosophy of Caló d’en Real was to be a community of family and friends, which meant for these first residents that the design of all the houses had to be designed by the same architect, thus establishing a unique style. These houses demonstrate a visual control over the sea with the advantage of the outdoor spaces, where the arcades and pillars are used to support the sails that create the nuances. The houses are defined by complex volumes, with a cubist style that recalls in some ways the discipline of the Bauhaus. After being a residential complex of Belgian family and friends for the first two decades, over time, the second sale of the property transformed Caló d’en Real into a more cosmopolitan community. In addition to the Belgians, today there are, among others, German, Italian, Swiss, French and American residents, and it is considered one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods in Ibiza.
